First, I am a long-time hacker golfer who enjoys the game despite its maddening effect on my psyche. I have been playing for decades, though I don't really work at the game. I shoot around 90 with the occasional dip into the 80's and the occasional day I don't talk about except with my therapist.
I bought a new driver and fairway metals in 2022 and decided to replace my aging irons this year. For me, buying a driver and buying irons are completely different processes. I can stand in an indoor hitting bay and pick a driver pretty well. But, when it comes to irons, the bay doesn't work. I need to hit off turf, not a mat that makes even my worst shots feel good. And, unlike most other sellers of equipment, the fact that Par Tee is also a driving range gives it a huge advantage.
But, I wouldn't be giving a five-star review if it was just because I could hit off turf. Turf is what caused me to call Par Tee, but it's the experience that makes it five stars.
I made an appointment with Palmer and met with him on a blustery fall afternoon at the range. He assessed what I was looking for and we headed out to hit. We spent an hour or, rather he endured me for an hour, looking to hone in on what I'd be happy with. During this time he struck the perfect balance of suggesting without coercing. He didn't so much try to tell me what to buy. Instead, he helped refine what I wanted. I came with an idea of what iron model, shaft, lie angle, etc. I wanted. He didn't try to change my mind, but instead help me find the right combination. In the end, I bought the model I intended but with a different lie and shaft.
The reason I had some idea of what I wanted was because I'd demoed clubs at a golf tournament recently. But, had I come with no clue as to what I wanted, I'm sure I'd have left just as happy. Palmer did a great job of reading my needs and adapting the fitting to them along with my preferences. He also saw some things in my swing to tweak just so I'd get a better read on how the clubs would play. It was part mini-lesson and part club fitting.
After I decided, he placed the order with the manufacturer. I didn't have to put down a deposit and I was not charged a fitting fee. The next day, Tom called to say that the shafts and grips were on backorder and both asking what I wanted to do and offering options. I wasn't in a hurry and so we stuck with my original order with an understanding that he'd change the grips if the backorder went on too long. He also confirmed what I'd ordered and helpfully reminded me that with the stronger lofts on new clubs, I might need to look at wedges. He wasn't trying to sell me, just wanted me to understand that these weren't like my old grandpa clubs.
The clubs came in earlier than I expected and I got a call right away. When I came to pick them up, Tom and I discussed wedges and, after making fun of my wedges calculation spreadsheet, he talked me out of buying three wedges and into buying only two for now. Again, no upsell. He basically said, "you're a hacker, dude. You don't need high end wedges." Tom also talked me out of buying specialty grinds. He didn't try to sell me what he had in stock, either.
The whole experience was around making sure I'd be happy with my clubs, not selling. Not maximizing profits. Par Tee's approach is to turn you into a long term satisfied customer. Rare these days.
As for price, the irons I bought, the exact set, were available on two discount golf sites for $100 more than I paid. I can't tell you this will always be the case, but I can say that you should never pay more there than you could anywhere else.
